It is very easy for us to become consumed by ideas of other people. Whether it be politically, financially and especially religiously. When it comes to religion, other people’s guidance and opinions, whether current or of the past, are not wrong by any means, but they can be harmful if we only go by them on the surface and never go deeper. I think this is easy for us to do in the Christian culture and what happens is that we never get to a point where we have our own theology, but we have the theology based on other people’s views and opinions that they have shared with the world. We become so consumed with traditions, beliefs and history that is really what someone else believed to be true and we just nod our heads like bobble heads in agreement and never really grow in our own understanding of Christ or the Bible.
Colossians 2:8-10 talks directly to this issue: ‘See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in Him, who is the head of all rule and authority.’
We are filled in Him, Christ Jesus. I’m not attempting to be harsh by saying that it is easy for us to become consumed by traditions, beliefs and history, but at the same time I am. It is time for the Church, the bride of Christ, to step out of it’s status quo ways and really get back to the heart of Christ. Find the passion that fired the apostles up to go risk their lives to share the Good News. I hope that we can all figure out our own theology and not focus on someone else’s and call it our own. Let us not be taken captive by the philosophies, empty deceit, human traditions and the elemental spirits of the world. Let us become fully captive by Christ alone.
