Andy Stanley’s newest book, The Grace of God, goes through examples from the Bible that show how people have sinned against God, and through their depravity, God extends His hand of grace to them, and us for the sins that we commit against him. Using examples from the Old and New Testament, Stanley shows that “from the very beginning God has responded to the sin of humanity with amazing grace.” From the beginning with Adam and Eve to Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, David, Solomon, Matthew, Peter, amongst many others, we find that all of them have needed the hand of God’s grace due to their sins. The amazing thing is that God does not ask anything in return for His grace.
Stanley reminds us that through God’s grace, that we all need, God gives us something that we do not deserve. Although we all need God’s grace, not everyone will receive it. The people that God has chosen to receive His grace will receive it, and although we may feel this is unfair, we do not want what we fairly deserve. We all deserve Hell due to our sins against God, but as Stanley puts it “grace is the vehicle God uses on occasion to ensure that we get precisely what we don’t deserve.” We all need God’s grace as we have all fallen short of the glory of God.
