Philip Ryken in his newest book “Loving The Way Jesus Loves” walks through 1 Corinthians 13 in order to help to explain the true meaning of the “Love Chapter”. One of the most over quoted passages in the Bible, primarily at weddings, Ryken helps the reader to discover exactly Paul’s intention in writing 1 Corinthians 13, and how Jesus can be seen throughout. Ryken, from the start, shows that what has come to be used at wedding has been mistaken as “eros” love, but instead is meant to be defined as “agape” love, or the selfless love of brothers and sisters in Christ.
Throughout the book, Ryken expositionally goes through 1 Corinthians 13 verse by verse helping the reader to see Christ in each. As one reads through the book, it begins to be easier to see Jesus in each passage through the example seen in the gospels of how Jesus loved his brothers and sisters, and how they were to love each other in Him. Ryken helps the reader to begin to replace “love” in the passage with “Jesus” and eventually begin to see how they are to enter their own name. As Jesus was loving, and he was all of the attributes described in this passage, we are to live out each of these attributes in our own lives to those around in and out of the faith.
